It was a great family holiday and we completely enjoyed our two week holiday in Ibiza to the full this year, I felt great, wearing a bikini in public, it was the first time in about five years that I have had the confidence to wear a bikini in public. Mary Jane was my second born, just over 5 years ago, I have not been able to wear anything like this. There has been a couple of reasons for this, the first is the extra weight I put on whilst in pregnancy, far more this time than my first daughter, I have heard that this is common and plenty of women tend to carry extra weight whilst in there second or third pregnancy.

Carrying the extra weight whilst pregnant was not an issue for me, 3 or 4 months after the birth though, that was when it became a real problem for me, this is when I felt I should of lost the extra weight (if only I had known about Strip That Fat at this time!) you see, my weight was still going up! Something my husband noticed and I refused to see, was that my eating habits were changing. It was very rare in the past that I would ever eat snacks between meals and my portion size at meal time was fairly small, also I would leave food on the plate as soon as I started to feel that full sensation.

Now things had changed, I was eating between meals, not much but enough though if you know what I mean. Two or 3 biscuits with a cup of coffee mid morning and a Snickers bar in the afternoon with a cup of tea. Now that does not sound excessive really, but it was something I never used to do before, also I never used to touch coffee, but a mug of black tea in the afternoon has always been a favourite with me!

Another modification to my eating habits my husband could see was at meal times and was simply this; I was putting more food on my plate, eating it faster and more importantly was the fact that I would now, never leave even a scrap of food on the plate any more. The mixture of the snack between meals and eating more at meal time is simple, more calories enter your body every day, more calories and energy than you need to maintain your body, the resulting product; weight gain!

My husband was never detrimental to me about my changing eating habits, he was simply responding to me and my questions about why can’t I lose weight.

My weight gain continued for several years after the birth of my second daughter, which resulted in to me growing in to quite a big girl, with the side effect to me of a lack of confidence and even Panic Attacks, you know the sort of thing, wearing baggy clothes, covering up as much as possible whilst out in public, if you have been there, you know just how it feels!

Anyway, about 18 months ago things changed big time for me, Julie, a friend of mine with the same weight problems tried a program called Strip That Fat, now she did not really think it was going to help at the time, but she gave it a try. Now this is the good bit of my blog, she got great results and started a steady, consistent but noticeable weight loss! There was nothing for it, I had to give the Strip That Fat program my best shot.

Very similar results happened to me too, which was great as over about 18 moths I have worked my way down to a size10, which gave me the confidence to wear the bikini this summer! Within a few weeks of our second child being born I felt very low on energy feeling completely out of it virtually all the time. I’d seen my doctor several times, and every time I was told the same thing - you’re fine it must be stress.

I finally went to see an alternative health therapist one day who intimated that I should look into doing a detox, and generally learning about how to detox the body and how my eating habits may be affecting my health. It sounded like a good idea, so figured it was a worthy investment of my time to at least check it out, and try to understand why alternative health therapists say it’s so popular and advocate detox diets and in particular the week detox so avidly.

Another thing she suggested to me was to try a detox foot pads. I now treat myself to a foot massage at least once a week, but if you don’t have one of those, the detox patches can be just as good - although your don’t get the relaxing foot massage at the same time

This is what I learnt about detoxing your body.

Herbal teas are just as good as water

Drinking plenty of fluid is absolutely vital while you are following a detox diet because it will help purge excessive toxins from your body. It also helps to prevent constipation, reduce bloating, and improves your complexion. Your goal should be to drink about 8 glasses (or 2 liters) of water each day, although you will need more in hot weather or on days when you are exercising.

As a guideline, aim to drink an extra half liter of water for every hour you exercise. The best water to drink is home filtered tap water, or boiled water which has cooled, or bottled water. Ideally drink water that is at room temperature. Feel free to substitute herbal teas if you can’t face all that water - loose leaf tea is the better option if it’s available. Dandelion root, yarrow, roibosch and green tea in particular are great choices as their additional properties help the detox process. Roibosch and green tea is also beneficial as it is a rich source of natural antioxidants.

How Can I Possibly Drink So Much?

Drinking this much water will soon be second nature to you. Start your first glass of water with a little freshly squeezed lemon juice or root ginger as soon as you get up - this is great for kick-starting your digestive system and bowel then have more water whenever you take a coffee break.

Aim to have a glass whenever you eat, if you make tea of coffee during the day drink water as well, have another drink mid evening and a last drink before you go to bed. As I mentioned above, you can replace some glasses of water with herbal teas.

Try To Eat Food Which Is As Fresh As Possible

Try buying farm fresh food and either juice them or eat them raw, in salads or as snacks or appetizers. When raw, food still has all its enzymes and nutrients intact. If food is kept too long, or if it has been cooked or processed in any way, it kills the natural enzymes.

If at all possible buy from local farms or producers, preferably at farms and markets in your area. Food from other countries is generally harvested before it is ripe (so it will be short of it’s full vitamin and mineral supply) and will have a longer time to lose nutrients on it’s trip to the supermarkets.

Do You Need To Go Organic

When detoxing, there’s no need to go completely organic, especially as the cost can be very high, but if you can afford to stretch to buying a few organic products it will be a great help.

If you can’t buy many organic foods, don’t worry. It’s more important that you eat plentiful amounts of fresh foods regardless of them being organic or not, instead of eating too few of them. Having said that, there are some very beneficial health reasons of having as much as possible of organic produce on a healthy detox diet.

Organic foods are produced without the use of artificial pesticides and fertilizers, so they contain the lowest possible amounts of artificial, potentially toxic chemicals (such as nitrates). The practice of organic farming is very contentious due to the fact that there’s a lot of evidence that the cumulative impact of toxins from man made chemicals and bug sprays can cause long term health problems.

By comparison, organic foods are processed much less than non-organic. The end result being that organic foods are free from artificial additives and hydrogenated fats. And you may notice that organic foods also taste better and have much deeper flavors.
